The nature of our predicament
The nature of our predicament in much of the world is that we either live as if we own the planet, or aspire to do so. Homo Sapiens have existed in the modern form for millennia, having affected our local environs in often detrimental ways given the lack of controls on our actions. Today, is no different, we are either shopping ourselves out of existence through consumption of (for the most part) useless products or poisoning our bodies and the planet with the results of said shopping (whether it be of food, clothing, cars, cosmetics or et al.). The folly of us will be that those of us who truly live sustainably are those who will most quickly perish as the rest of the world blindly waits for something to get us our of this quagmire we have gotten ourselves into in the past century and a half.
Business and Industry have repeatedly told us (especially in North America and Europe) that if they are left to govern themselves, they will do so; yet, when looking back on such promises, we find they are sorely lacking in integrity. We, the people of this planet, of each country, town and city cannot let our rights to live be dictated to by anyone else but ourselves; for if we do (and we have been doing so very much of late, whether it be on the issue of Climate Change, the Iraq war, or local action on whatever issue you can think of), we have already given up. In Canada, we are not being listened to by our federal government, who seemingly is placating Business and Industry, while not doing what we have so vocally asked for (on the topic of Climate Change), that being to institute serious and firm limits. I am doing what I can to diminish my carbon and related ecological footprints; but without real energy and effort on the part of the federal government (who, by the way, is only there to act on the populace’s behalf and do what we ask of them in the best conscience of the people and nation (both in the short and longer term)), no real action or measures will be enacted without the current government falling (and it being supported by ineffectual opposition parties more interested in retaining their seats than acting as bid by their constituents) and a new government (I would suggest being made up neither of the Conservatives or Liberals (as the majority party) be formed to act on our behalf to help us curb Climate Change and reign in the lack of integrity of both Business and Industry before we live in a grim future that Dickens would have thought too vile and horrid to contemplate and would have made Dante relish his Inferno.
